Grinnell Veterans Monument - concept drawing
Grinnell Veterans Monument
Central Park, Grinnell, Iowa, completion slated for 2026.
Grinnell Veterans Monument is a collaboration between: JTL Workshop Inc. (Joe Tuggle Lacina), Ritland+Kuiper Landscape Architects, Vector Custom Fabrication, MODUS Engineering, and Clapsaddle-Garber Associates.
The monument design selected by the steering committee is a 43 foot tall metal spiral featuring stars and stripes in the nature of the American flag. These details will be created by perforations through the metal skin of the flag form. Visitors can enter the spiral path created by the flag design and discover a large open air room, about 20 feet in diameter, in the center of the spiral. This internal space is designed to be unseen from outside the monument and is discovered as one enters the monument.
The holes in the metal spiral will permit natural light to penetrate into the center room and permit viewers from inside and outside the center room to see forms through the perforations. At night, these same holes will permit light to emit from the monument, defining the stars and stripes.
